This is an preliminary sketch for a color portrait. The Heermann’s Gull is a bird of concern as it nests only on one island in Baja. Recent warm waters have meant a drop in the bate fish that they depend on to raise their you, so a three-year breeding failure has placed additional pressure on this species. Interestingly, the Elegant Tern which breeds on the same islands has adapted and moved its colonies northward. As a result of this situation, few (if any) juveniles have shown up in their normal late-summer and fall areas in the Central California.
