Pomarine Jaeger

Pomarine Jaeger. This bird has always impressed me with its substance and muscle. On the open water of California’s Monterey and Half Moon Bay is is pure domination… that is until the even-more-fierce South Polar Skua shows up! Until then, it is the most dramatic predator on the scene. As a result, I chose heavy, bold strokes to show its Falcon-like angles and hopefully strength. I haven’t used so much black for a while, but he subject demanded it. One of yesterday’s individuals was adorned with grandiose spoon-like streamers on its tail, leading me to make the comparison with our local Great-tailed Grackles.
