Juvenile Baird’s Sandpiper

Today’s juvenile Baird’s Sandpiper at Bayfront Park. This is by far my favorite fall arrival, bar none! I know went on about the Short-billed Dowitcher and all, but this bird reigns supreme. Elegantly proportioned, beautiful, buffy and subtle, it is pure beauty on wings. The exaggerated scaley pattern on the back is an indication of its freshman status. Like all juveniles, this beautiful crisp, nicely organized plumage will not be present long. The long primary projection is an indication of it’s long journey, just now beginning. Get one soon, or wait another year…
