“Bell’s” Sage Sparrow

Keeping with the theme of local subspecies, our coastal “Bell’s” Sage Sparrow is very different from the paler, more streaky interior populations. In fact, some authorities feel Bell’s Sparrow should be elevated to full species status! Wouldn’t that be cool… In any case, “Bell’s” Sage likes coastal chamise and is generally darker, and more sharply patterned than the desert birds of the Great Basin.
